For New York City Parents and Kids Preparing for the SHSAT
Anyone who has looked for free printable practice SHSAT tests knows—it can be hard. Or expensive. I’m working on an automated way to generate a limitless number of sample questions (like below).

What does it look like?

What does the app do?
Lets users go to an URL and…
Answer sample SHSAT questions from a web browser or phone
Print questions, along with an answer key
Customize the theme (brooklyn, bronx, chinatown)
Lets admins generate a TON of SHSAT sample problems (terminal only right now)—along with answer keys and hints. Content is entirely math at the moment, but can be extended. There are some formatting issues to work out, and hosting logistics—but this is relatively small potatoes.
Is it ready?
At the moment… 🤷🏽♂️ It’s ready enough for anyone with the patience to tolerate bugs. I work on it in the evenings and weekends. This substack is really a chronicle of how it develops over a long period of time. And I’d love to get your input!
Why did it take so long?
Long story short… about a year ago, I started two personal passion projects—this SHSAT app and a writing project—but then got super duper busy with work. Like, drop-everything busy. I literally dropped everything not related to software development (including my health)—for a long time 😢. I quit my AI job this June, restored my health, and resumed work on those personal projects. 😄
